If you want to import iPhone/iPod pictures without launching iPhoto, you can do it really rapidly with Preview instead. Connect the iPhone, launch Preview, and choose Import from xxx's iPhone. You see a thumbnail of all the pictures and you can then import whatever you want. A green checkmark shows what's already been imported.
You can also delete photos directly from the phone at this point if desired.
